Titled “President Bola Tinubu’s Tribute to Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti at 99,” the statement expressed profound admiration for Fasoranti’s life and legacy.
“Today, I join family, friends, and associates in celebrating our beloved father and leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as he marks an extraordinary 99 years,” Tinubu said.
He praised Fasoranti’s enduring mental clarity despite his age, describing him as a living testament to divine grace. The President lauded the elder statesman’s lifelong dedication to public service, particularly his impact as a teacher, principal, and founder of Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School.
Highlighting his political journey, Tinubu noted Fasoranti’s deep-rooted values of honour, integrity, and progressivism. He recalled his early political engagements with Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), where Fasoranti served as a close ally of Awolowo.
Tinubu also acknowledged Fasoranti’s tenure as Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State (1979–1983), under Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, applauding his role in implementing the UPN’s landmark programs on education, healthcare, and rural development.
The President paid tribute to Fasoranti’s courage during Nigeria’s military era, particularly his role in the pro-democracy movement through Afenifere and NADECO. “During the darkest days of dictatorship, Baba Fasoranti remained steadfast in his commitment to democracy, inspiring younger generations like myself,” Tinubu remarked.
Recognizing the personal losses Fasoranti has endured, Tinubu commended his unshakable faith and resilience. “Even in grief, Baba has remained a pillar of Christian faith and exemplary leadership.”
Reflecting on their relationship, Tinubu recalled visiting Fasoranti in Akure during his presidential campaign, appreciating the elder’s support and blessings. “It is fulfilling to know he is witnessing our efforts to rebuild the Nigerian economy and ensure national progress,” he said.
In conclusion, Tinubu urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from Fasoranti’s legacy. “As we honour Baba Fasoranti at 99, may his life of service guide us to work selflessly for the common good,” he said. “Happy birthday to our beloved leader, and may our land continue to be blessed with wise elders like him.”
