Under the revised guidelines, the President will now travel with a streamlined team of 20 officials, down from the previous count of over 50 individuals. Similarly, the Vice President’s entourage will consist of only five officials, while the First Lady and the wife of the Vice President will each be accompanied by five officials on international trips. For domestic journeys, the President’s entourage has been reduced to 25, the Vice President’s to 15, and the First Lady and the wife of the Vice President will travel with 10 aides.
In a bid to ensure fiscal prudence, the President has mandated that security details for local trips be sourced from the host state, minimizing the need for a large contingent and the associated duty travel allowances. The directive extends to foreign trips as well, where ministers are limited to a maximum of four officials in their delegation. Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are now restricted to traveling with a maximum of two officials.
To enforce compliance with these measures, the presidential spokesman emphasized that officials flouting the directive would do so at their own risk. A circular detailing these instructions has reportedly been dispatched to various ministries, departments, and agencies from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The overarching goal is to instill prudence and discipline in resource management within the government.
