The Federal Government has announced plans to take possession of Union Bank and Keystone Bank, following an investigation that alleges former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele acquired these banks at a substantial discount. The investigative report indicates that Emefiele, who was suspended shortly after Tinubu assumed office in late May, purchased Union Bank of Nigeria and Keystone Bank through various proxies using “ill-gotten wealth” and without clear evidence of payment. The preliminary findings suggest that Keystone Bank was acquired for free, raising concerns about the transparency and legality of the acquisition.
Emefiele, who faced charges of fraud and was subsequently arrested and detained, met bail conditions and was released on Saturday, as reported by Punch Newspapers. The Nigerian leader had ordered an investigation into the operations of the Central Bank and directed collaboration with security and anti-corruption agencies.
The report by investigator Jim Obazee alleges that certain individuals acted as proxies in the acquisition of the two banks, with the complicity and assistance of Godwin Emefiele and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Emefiele has denied any wrongdoing, and his legal team has not commented on the investigation’s findings. Government officials have yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
The looming takeover of Union Bank and Keystone Bank raises questions about corporate governance, financial transparency, and the government’s commitment to addressing alleged financial irregularities within the banking sector.
