President Tinubu announced the changes on Friday as part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture, leading to the replacement of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and other service chiefs.
Reacting to the development during an interview on Channels Television, Agbakoba described the move as a bold and sensible step, particularly if reports of a planned coup were accurate.
He praised the president’s decisiveness, noting that such leadership quality was missing under the previous administration.
“You have a president who is ready to take tough decisions, and we know that he doesn’t shy away from them,” Agbakoba said. “I think he has done the right thing because his predecessor, the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, avoided making such changes and allowed his military chiefs to stay much longer than necessary.”
The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president further said the timing of the shake-up was appropriate, emphasizing that Tinubu acted wisely in the face of growing security concerns.
“So, if it’s indeed true that there was a rumoured coup, I believe he acted sensibly by taking this step. What matters now is to see the impact of that decision,” Agbakoba concluded.
