In the letter, Tinubu emphasized that Oluyede’s confirmation is in accordance with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. He described Oluyede as a professional with significant contributions to the military, noting that his qualifications make him well-suited to lead the army.
The president urged lawmakers to expedite Oluyede’s confirmation process. Oluyede had been appointed acting COAS on October 30, following the prolonged illness of the former Army Chief, Taoreed Lagbaja. Tragically, Lagbaja passed away on November 5 after a brief illness.
Following Lagbaja’s death, Tinubu promoted Oluyede to the rank of lieutenant-general and formally decorated him in a ceremony attended by top military officials. Prior to his appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna. A seasoned officer, Oluyede was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 and was promoted to major general in September 2020.
Oluyede and the late Lagbaja were both members of the 39th Regular Course at the Nigerian Defence Academy, a testament to their long and distinguished careers in the military. In addition to seeking approval from the House of Representatives, Tinubu has also submitted Oluyede’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.
