The off-cycle election took place across 4,519 polling units in the 18 local government areas of Edo State.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu commended APC national leaders, Edo State leaders, and party governors for their efforts in securing the victory. He noted that this win reflects the people’s support for the ruling party, its progressive ideals, and its commitment to enhancing the lives of Nigerians.
Tinubu urged Senator Okpebholo to view his victory as a call to service rather than an opportunity for self-congratulation. He encouraged the Governor-elect to show magnanimity by reaching out to his political opponents and fostering unity among the people of Edo State to promote development.
The President also acknowledged the contributions of other candidates to Nigeria’s democratic process, highlighting that peaceful political contests like this one showcase the nation as a stable democracy. He urged those dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress through legal avenues.
Additionally, Tinubu praised the people of Edo State for their orderly and peaceful behavior during the election, emphasizing the progress of Nigeria’s democracy over the past 25 years.
He commended INEC and security agencies for their dedication in ensuring a successful and largely smooth election, stating, “INEC has once again shown its commitment to organizing free and fair elections in our country.”
