This decision comes just two days after Tinubu had appointed Dr. Olufemi Adekanmbi, a former Ondo State Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism, to the position.
The presidency explained that the reversal was made after a performance review concluded that Zabbey was well-suited to fulfill his duties according to the regulations governing the HYPREP.
Prof. Zabbey was initially appointed in May 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, taking over from Dr. Giadom Dumbari.
On the same day, over 200 Ogoni youths protested outside the HYPREP office on Ken Saro-Wiwa Road in Port Harcourt, demanding Zabbey’s reinstatement and rejecting his removal. They pledged to continue their occupation until the President’s decision was reversed and an Ogoni indigene was appointed.
Savior Oscar, a leader of the protesters and Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, expressed their frustration, stating, “The Ogoni have been marginalized and neglected for too long. This project is a result of our struggle, and the funds used for HYPREP are Ogoni funds.”
Oscar emphasized that the Ogoni community should have the authority to decide who serves as Project Coordinator, insisting that their voices must be heard.
He criticized President Tinubu for not addressing the Ogoni issue in his recent speeches, contrasting it with his predecessor’s acknowledgment of the community’s challenges.
Barinuazor Emmanuel, National President of the National Youths Council of Ogoni People, also stated that the protests would continue until their demands were met.
