In a personally signed statement released on Thursday, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a major milestone for the APC, noting that it represents the party’s fourth electoral cycle since its establishment.

Tinubu stated that the APC was built on the ideals of progressive politics, consensus-building, sacrifice, and commitment to party unity.

According to him, those principles of selflessness and loyalty have helped the party navigate previous elections while remaining united and stronger over time.

The President acknowledged ongoing efforts by party stakeholders to adopt consensus arrangements in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, describing the approach as a healthy option capable of reducing internal conflicts and unnecessary tension.

He encouraged party members to take advantage of the consensus process to ensure smoother primaries and strengthen unity within the ruling party.

However, Tinubu stressed that in situations where consensus cannot be achieved, aspirants must participate in the primaries with maturity, fairness, and sportsmanship.

He warned against the return of “do-or-die” politics, urging contestants to avoid actions capable of destabilising the party.

According to the President, winners should remain humble in victory, while those who lose should accept the outcome in good faith and continue working for the party’s future.

“In every contest, there will always be winners and losers,” Tinubu stated. “Those who emerge victorious should avoid arrogance, while those who do not succeed must show maturity and prepare for another opportunity.”

He added that true political strength lies in preserving unity rather than destroying the system out of frustration.

“Our political opponents would prefer to see us divided, and we must not give them that satisfaction,” he said.

Tinubu further urged successful aspirants and party leaders to reconcile with aggrieved members after the primaries by extending olive branches and promoting inclusiveness.

He insisted that politics should no longer be approached as a desperate, winner-takes-all battle.

The President also appealed to APC governors and party officials to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the primary process.

He called on party leaders to rise above sentiments and provide all aspirants with equal opportunities regardless of personal loyalties or political interests.

According to Tinubu, even aspirants who fail to secure tickets should leave the process convinced that fairness and justice prevailed.

The President additionally advocated stronger participation for women and young people within the party’s political structure.

He described the inclusion of youths and women as extremely important to the future of the APC and urged delegates and party leaders to give them greater consideration during the primaries.

“We cannot continue to sideline two of the most important demographics in our society,” he said.

Tinubu also warned security agencies to remain neutral during the APC primaries and limit their role strictly to maintaining peace and public order.

He cautioned the police and other security operatives against interfering in the internal affairs of the party beyond their constitutional responsibilities.
