President Bola Tinubu has directed the indefinite suspension of Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and three executive directors. This decision was communicated by Ajuri Ngelale, the special adviser to President Tinubu on media and publicity, in a statement released on Thursday. A new management team has been appointed to assume acting roles within the agency.
The statement by Ngelale revealed that the President has initiated a broader investigation into the activities of the suspended officials. The suspended executives include Olaniyi Alaba Netufo, Executive Director of Corporate Services; Barka Sajou, Executive Director of Technical Services; and Sa’adatu Balgore, Executive Director of Rural Electrification Fund (REF).
The suspension comes in the wake of comprehensive findings from an investigation into the financial activities of the REA. President Tinubu has taken this decisive action based on evidence of fraudulent misexpenditure amounting to over N1.2 billion in the past two years. Some of the misappropriated funds have already been recovered by anti-graft agencies.
In response to the situation, President Tinubu has appointed a new set of qualified individuals to oversee the affairs of the Rural Electrification Agency on an interim basis. The newly appointed acting executives are Abba Abubakar Aliyu as the Managing Director/CEO, Ayoade Gboyega as the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Umar Abdullahi Umar as the Executive Director of Technical Services, Doris Uboh as the Executive Director of Rural Electrification Fund (REF), and Olufemi Akinyelure as the Head of the Project Management Unit for the Nigeria Electrification Project.
