Niger State will serve as the initial pilot state for this nationwide initiative before other states join in. Governor Bago emphasized the purpose of the meeting, stating, “We are here to discuss with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security regarding Mr. President’s visit to Niger State for the commissioning of the mechanization process in agriculture. We also discussed the palliatives from the Federal Government, involving the distribution of food from grain reserves across the country. Niger State will lead the way in the North-Central region, with distribution set to commence next week.”
This initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive on February 8 to release approximately 42,000 metric tonnes of maize, millet, and other commodities from the national strategic reserves to address the escalating cost of food. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, confirmed this decision after a meeting of the Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention in Abuja. Additionally, the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria committed to releasing about 60,000 metric tonnes of rice to the markets.
On February 14, 2024, the federal government officially announced the free distribution of the approved 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to impoverished Nigerians. This move aims to alleviate the economic challenges faced by citizens and ensure food accessibility for those in need.
