President Bola Tinubu has instructed security agencies to crack down on the use of foreign flags, and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa emphasized that the presence of Russian flags represents a serious threat to national sovereignty. Musa warned that displaying foreign flags is considered treasonable and will be dealt with accordingly.

The protests, which began on August 1, 2024, have seen some demonstrators calling for intervention from Russian President Vladimir Putin and displaying Russian flags, which has led to heightened security measures and curfews in several northern states. The Chief of Defence Staff stated that the military would intervene if the protests escalated further, particularly if they involve foreign symbols or attempts to disrupt the country’s peace.

In response to the escalating violence and foreign flag incidents, various state governors, including those from Plateau, Kaduna, and Bauchi, have held emergency security meetings and imposed curfews to manage the unrest. The government has also increased its scrutiny of those behind the protests and the flags.

The Department of State Services (DSS) reported arrests related to the production and distribution of the Russian flags and is investigating those responsible. Despite the crackdown, protests continue with calls for the government to address economic hardship and dissatisfaction with the current administration.
