Traditional Ruler In Ogun Faces Suspension For Alleged Naira Abuse

NOA cited a violation of Section 21 (3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, which prohibits the spraying, dancing, or matching on the Naira during social occasions, constituting abuse and defacement of the currency.

Despite apologizing for the incident and attributing it to enthusiasm in celebrating his wife, Oba Sowemino faced suspension after the February statutory meeting of the council. The suspension, lasting two months, was announced by the council, following the recommendation of its Ethical Committee chaired by the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

During the suspension, Oba Sowemino is barred from attending government or public functions and will not receive his salary. The council’s Ethical Committee, led by Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, emphasized that the monarch’s actions breached the CBN Act and the Yoruba traditional institution. The committee cited a previous case where a citizen faced legal consequences for a similar offense.

Oba Sowemino expressed acceptance of the traditional council’s decision, likening it to a father chastising a beloved son. In a telephone conversation with the media, he revealed that the initial suspension duration was three months but was reduced to two months following his apology.
