The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified simply as Chinyere, in the Olympic Layout area of One-Day, Enugu.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Police Division on September 21, 2026, after information reached the police that he had allegedly killed the woman. Police spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said Emmanuel was initially rescued from an angry mob before he was taken into police custody.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicated that the incident allegedly occurred on September 19 following an argument between Emmanuel and the deceased. The police said the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment.

The alleged concealment was reportedly uncovered after a foul odour from the apartment attracted neighbours. According to the police, the neighbours forced their way into the apartment and apprehended Emmanuel before the arrival of law enforcement officers.

Ndukwe said the victim’s remains were subsequently evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts were being made to identify and contact her relatives.

The police spokesman further stated that Emmanuel allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation, claiming that the dispute with Chinyere involved allegations over who had infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). According to the police account, the argument escalated before the suspect allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing. The police said the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

The command also urged members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution when visiting people and to keep trusted relatives or friends informed about their movements.

The allegations against Emmanuel remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
