Tragedy Strikes Bauchi: Four Women Tragically Perish In Zakat Distribution Stampede

Four women tragically lost their lives in a stampede during an almsgiving event for the impoverished in Bauchi State. The incident unfolded at the headquarters of Shafa Holdings Company Plc along Jos Road around 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

According to reports, a large gathering comprising predominantly women, children, widows, and divorcees had assembled at the company premises as early as 7 a.m. in anticipation of receiving Zakat items. Initially, the distribution proceeded smoothly as beneficiaries were called in groups to collect their share. However, tension escalated among those awaiting their turn, resulting in restlessness and anxiety.

As the crowd grew increasingly impatient, a desperate struggle ensued to gain entry into the main premises, triggering a chaotic stampede. Amid the frenzy, numerous individuals fell to the ground and were trampled, resulting in several casualties. Emergency services swiftly responded, rushing the injured to Abubakar Tafawa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for urgent medical attention, where sadly, four women were pronounced dead.

SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the distressing incident, assuring that the situation had been brought under control. Upon receiving the distress call, Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa Mohammed promptly mobilized personnel to the scene, initiating rescue efforts and implementing measures to prevent further harm.

In response to the tragedy, the police swiftly intervened, cordoning off the area to prevent additional casualties and halting the almsgiving exercise. The community now mourns the loss of these four women, a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants in such charitable endeavors.
