A tragic incident has unfolded at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Allegedly, a Chinese national pushed a young female employee named Ocheze Ogbonna to her death from a crane.
The news of Ogbonna’s demise sparked outrage in her hometown of Umuahala, prompting a protest at the company’s premises. Nigerian Army personnel reportedly dispersed the demonstrators, resulting in injuries, including one protester, Light Chimeko Ahuruonye, whose condition is critical. Ahuruonye had to be transferred to a city hospital due to the inadequacy of local medical facilities.
A community leader, speaking to The Whistler, affirmed the determination of the youth to seek justice for Ogbonna.
This incident reignites concerns raised in August 2020 by a user identified as @Truthfully83, alleging exploitative labor practices at Inner Galaxy Group. Investigations revealed allegations of conditions reminiscent of a “modern-day slave camp,” with Nigerian workers enduring prolonged shifts devoid of breaks or days off. Additionally, reports detailed instances of physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by Chinese supervisors, who reportedly addressed Nigerian employees as “master” or “mistress.”
These revelations underscore the pressing need for a comprehensive investigation into the labor practices at Inner Galaxy Steel Company and the broader issue of foreign labor exploitation in Nigeria.
