The violence erupted around 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, when suspected cultists reportedly stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately.
A resident, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity, said members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities were believed to be involved in the confrontation. The source identified the slain police officer as Olamilekan, attached to the Obalende Division in Ijebu-Ode, while the identity of the second victim remains unknown.
The resident recounted, “Tragedy struck last night around 10 p.m. at Ilese via Ijebu-Ode, as two individuals were killed in a suspected cult clash between the Aiye and Eiye confraternities. One of the victims is a police officer serving at Obalende Division, Ijebu-Ode, known as Olamilekan, while the second person is yet to be identified. They were shooting sporadically, leaving residents in panic.”
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the attack on Sunday, noting that he was still awaiting a full report. “I can confirm that a police officer was a victim in the incident. I am still waiting for the details of what really happened,” he said.
The killing adds to a growing list of attacks on security personnel. In a recent incident in Akure, Ondo State, a police officer on duty was stabbed to death by suspected thugs.
Sources told Leadership that the officer was attacked near the Arakale area following an altercation with the assailants. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Olushola Ayanlade confirmed the incident, clarifying that it occurred earlier on Wednesday.
According to Ayanlade, “While performing his lawful duties in the early morning hours, the officer encountered a group described as uncooperative and belligerent. What began as a routine engagement quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. The officer was stabbed by one of the assailants and sustained critical injuries. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed.”
Two suspects—Shina Jacob, 25, and Felix Olalekan, 32—have been arrested in connection with the attack. The officer was rushed to a hospital but later died despite efforts to save him.
Ayanlade described the death as a painful loss for the police command, emphasizing that the officer died in the line of duty while protecting lives and property. He assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that the suspects will face court proceedings once the probe is concluded.
