The incident occurred on Thursday, but the victims succumbed to the poisoning by Sunday. State Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, confirmed the tragedy and explained that the soup was mistakenly seasoned with fertilizer, which led to the fatalities.

Three of the victims passed away on Friday, while the remaining two died at Sokoto Specialist Hospital on Sunday, despite medical efforts. Two additional family members are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

Upon learning of the incident while she was in Abuja for official duties, Commissioner Balarabe immediately dispatched relevant officials to address the situation and assist in saving lives. However, the consumed substance had severely affected the victims’ organs, leading to their untimely deaths.

The commissioner advised the public to store hazardous substances separately from foodstuffs to prevent such tragedies. A relative of the victims, Muhammad Abdullahi, expressed gratitude for the commissioner’s swift response and support, praising her for her dedication.

Dr. Attahiru Sokoto, Chief Medical Director of Sokoto Specialist Hospital, described the incident as deeply unfortunate.
