Two people were reported dead from a stray bullet fired by a police officer in the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti. The victims, local youths, were caught in the crossfire when police attempted to arrest a suspected internet fraudster.
A resident told Leadership, “The fraudster had hit a motorcyclist and their passenger while being pursued by the police, causing the accident. Irate youths then prevented the police from making the arrest. During the confrontation, a shot was fired, resulting in the deaths of two people.”
In response, the Ekiti State Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, stated:
“On 28/05/2024 at about 22:30hrs, a serious accident occurred involving a Lexus car and a Jincheng motorcycle along Omisanjana Area of Ado-Ekiti. Upon receiving the information, the Command deployed the State Traffic Section to the scene to maintain order and ensure the safety of the victims.
Upon arrival, the officers faced resistance from some irate youths who prevented them from performing their duties and insisted on taking matters into their own hands. This led to a call for reinforcements.
During the ensuing chaos, one officer accidentally fired a shot that fatally injured two individuals.
The officer responsible has been disarmed, arrested, and detained and will face immediate disciplinary action.“⬤
