A tragic incident unfolded on Monday, January 29, when a vehicle carrying loggers hit a landmine in Borno state, near the Cameroon border, an area known for Boko Haram activity. At least 12 loggers lost their lives in the explosion, as reported by two NGOs operating in the region. One of the reports stated, “Men suspected to be Boko Haram planted explosives and killed 12 people while many were injured along the Pulka to Gwoza route.” Another report confirmed the toll, revealing that seven other loggers sustained injuries, three of whom are in critical condition and have been evacuated to Maiduguri for further medical attention.
Despite these reports, the Nigerian security forces have not yet responded to requests for confirmation of the incident. Notably, there has been an alarming increase in mine explosions targeting civilian convoys in the region, with jihadist groups, including Boko Haram, being blamed for these attacks.
