Tragic Loss: University Student Takes Own Life After Losing ₦600,000 to Betting Nigerians React

It was alleged that Danlami had used funds entrusted to him for other purposes, including betting.
A fellow student, who spoke with Daily Trust, revealed that the student’s body was found hanging from the ceiling in his room by a neighbour, who immediately alerted authorities. The student said, “It is true that one of our fellow students committed suicide after mismanaging money meant for house rent due to gambling.”
The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that Danlami was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
SP Abiodun said, “On January 19, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m., information was received that Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBUL, was found hanging in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan. A student neighbour raised the alarm, and the victim was taken to General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead. Police operatives attached to Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation, and contacted the deceased’s family. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the reason for his action.”
Aliyu Abubakar, General Secretary of the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), also confirmed the tragic incident, describing it as deeply saddening.
