Highlighting the grim aftermath of these incidents, Uga disclosed that 2,092 people suffered various degrees of injuries as a result of the crashes. Pinpointing the primary culprits behind these road mishaps, he attributed a significant number to drivers engaging in excessive speeding and other traffic violations. Additionally, wrongful overtaking, tire bursts, and night journeys were identified as contributing factors.
Expressing concern over the prevalent issues, Uga issued a plea to motorists, especially those navigating the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, urging them to exercise caution and avoid over-speeding and hazardous driving practices. Emphasizing preventive measures, he suggested the installation of speed limiting devices in vehicles and strict adherence to traffic rules to minimize accidents.
In a bid to enhance road safety awareness, Uga cautioned against the use of expired tires and advocated for adequate rest before embarking on journeys. He revealed plans for the FRSC to conduct repeated public enlightenment campaigns at motor parks, churches, and mosques to educate the public on the crucial importance of safe motoring practices.
Furthermore, Uga announced the FRSC’s intention to extend its outreach to schools in Ogun, aiming to instill a sense of road safety culture in students from an early age. By addressing both drivers and the younger demographic, the FRSC hopes to contribute to a safer road environment and reduce the distressing statistics of road accidents in Ogun State.
