Transforming Policing: IGP Egbetokun’s New Strategy To Enhance Professionalism

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has authorized training and reorientation courses for all police officers.

that this approval was made during a virtual meeting on Monday, attended by the Inspector General of Police, Commissioners of Police (CPs), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and the Force Management Team.

Egbetokun emphasized that these training sessions are aimed at fostering attitudinal changes and ensuring the consistent adherence to the code of conduct among personnel during their duties.

According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Chief has also mandated a weekly lecture series across all units of the Force.

While acknowledging their efforts in combating crimes in 2024, he urged officers to enhance their anti-crime strategies to significantly reduce crime in 2025.

He highlighted that specialized training for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigators would improve their efficiency and preparedness for handling increasingly complex and high-profile criminal cases.

“These courses will focus on areas such as human rights, community policing, ethical conduct, and the proportional use of force, reinforcing the Force’s dedication to serving the public with integrity and respect,” he stated.

The weekly lectures across all levels of the Force, including Divisional, Area Commands, and State levels, will cover best practices in policing.

“These lectures will serve as a continuous professional development platform, ensuring that all personnel are updated on evolving legal frameworks, best practices, technological advancements in law enforcement, and other developments necessary for the effective execution of their duties.

“The sessions will also encourage interactive discussions and knowledge sharing among officers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the Force,” he added.

The Police Chief stressed that accountability at all levels is essential to achieving these objectives, with supervisors held responsible for the actions and misconduct of their subordinates.

Egbetokun reaffirmed his dedication to building a more effective and accountable police force that earns the trust and confidence of the citizens.
