Transport Regulation Overhaul: Lagos Targets Bus Operators with New Policies

In a bid to enhance the efficiency of public transportation in Lagos State, the government has unveiled plans to collaborate with bus operators and implement comprehensive restructuring measures.

Mr. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, revealed this during a meeting involving the Ministry of Transportation, Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA), and bus operators under the Bus Reform Initiative program. The initiative aims to systematically restructure the current chaotic public transport operations in alignment with the state’s Strategic Transportation Master Plan.

Giwa emphasized the necessity of collaboration to integrate the informal transport sector into the Bus Reform Initiative successfully. As a pilot, the Lekki/Epe corridor has been assessed to identify traffic flow challenges, with plans underway to deploy high-capacity buses according to the Lagos Transport Policy and Bus Route Network. Key aspects of the plan include reallocating mini buses to inner routes, implementing an e-ticketing system, upgrading transport infrastructure, and standardizing bus operations to improve service quality and ensure passenger safety along the corridor.

Giwa outlined that the restructuring would be phased, urging interested operators to register with the Ministry of Transportation within the next two weeks to receive designated routes and comply with the new regulations. He warned of penalties, including fines and vehicle forfeiture, for operators who fail to adhere to the guidelines.

Addressing concerns from union members, Mr. Olawale Musa, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, stressed the government’s reliance on union collaboration to identify and regulate unregistered operators along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing public transport efficiency and reliability across Lagos State, setting the stage for improved commuting experiences for residents.
