“Thank you, and such good English… Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?” Trump asked.
Boakai, a veteran statesman and business graduate, responded calmly, noting that he received his education in Liberia. Like most Liberians, Boakai speaks English as a first language. With his reply barely audible to cameras, it appeared the comment had left him slightly uneasy.
Trump, however, continued to remark on Boakai’s fluency: “It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well,” he said, prompting a mix of laughter and surprise among attendees, including several French-speaking West African leaders.
Liberia, which gained independence in 1847 after being established by freed African-American slaves repatriated by the American Colonization Society, adopted English as its official language and based much of its early governance on U.S. structures.
Today, while Liberia is home to numerous indigenous languages such as Kpelle, Mende, and Kissi, English remains the nation’s official language and medium of instruction. President Boakai is also fluent in several native tongues but primarily uses English in his official duties.
