The initial interaction began on Sunday when former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated Trump on his victory, sharing a message of goodwill on X. Jonathan wrote: “Dear President Trump, I extend my warmest felicitations to you on your election as the 47th President of the United States. Your impressive victory is a testament to the American people’s faith in your leadership and vision for the future. I am optimistic that your Presidency will not only advance the American dream but also promote the cause for global peace, stability, and progress.”
In response, the Donald Trump Campaign Updates account thanked Jonathan for his message, adding, “Thanks for your goodwill words together we will make America great again and restore electoral integrity in Nigeria and across the African continent.”
This post, shared around 11:37 am on Sunday, sparked excitement among some social media users, especially Nigerians, who assumed the account belonged to Trump himself and interpreted the message as a pledge to improve Nigeria’s electoral system.
However, a fact-check by TheCable revealed that the account in question is not Trump’s official X handle. It has over 1,700 followers and regularly posts pro-Trump content, but it is not verified, meaning the statement should not be taken as an official declaration from the U.S. president-elect.
