TUC Affirms Determination To Meet Minimum Wage Deadline....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has affirmed that efforts are underway to ensure the implementation of a new minimum wage starting April 2024. TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, shared this information in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja.

Comrade Osifo explained that if the Tripartite Committee, responsible for reviewing the Minimum Wage, faces challenges in meeting the deadline before the current N30,000 minimum wage expires, labor will advocate for the backdating of the implementation. Osifo, a committee member, highlighted that various subcommittees are diligently working according to the established timetable.

He revealed, “We have broken it into those subcommittees, and the timetable has also been rolled out. There will also be a visitation to different geopolitical zones, with town hall meetings scheduled for the first week of March across all six zones, engaging with workers and the public to gather diverse perspectives.”

Responding to concerns about the impending expiration of the current minimum wage, Osifo assured, “Yes, we are pushing sufficiently towards that. But at worst case, if it overshoots that particular period a bit, the government, on its own, I will also encourage them to backdate the implementation. So, let’s assume we conclude in May, for example, then the government will come back for two months. That is not too difficult a thing to ask for.
