Two-Year Delay No Barrier, Lagos State Promises To Build New AirportThe Lagos State Government has clarified that no legal issues are hindering the construction of an international airport in the Lekki area, which is set to complement the Murtala Muhammed Airport. The Federal Government had approved the construction of the new airport on October 10, 2022, with plans for the facility to handle around five million passengers annually, serving the Lekki, Ajah, and Epe areas of Lagos State once completed. When the approval letter was handed over to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika emphasized that the state was well-equipped to carry out the project, citing its cosmopolitan nature.

However, earlier reports in October suggested that legal disputes might delay the project, particularly over an agreement with Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, a terminal operator in the state. Concerns arose that the new airport could conflict with existing contracts.

Despite these concerns, Omotoso reaffirmed that the construction of the airport would remain a priority, with the project being incorporated into the state’s ambitious 2024 N2.2 trillion budget.
