Uber Shocks Nigerians, Announces Exit After 12 Years

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced its decision to end operations in Nigeria after 12 years of providing transportation services to customers across the country.

The company disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, saying it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective immediately following a comprehensive review of its business.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Uber began operations in Lagos in 2014 and expressed appreciation to Nigerians for trusting its platform to connect them with independent transportation providers for daily commutes, visits to family and friends, and other journeys.

The company described the decision to leave the Nigerian market as a difficult one and confirmed that its operations would officially end on September 2, 2026.

Uber also acknowledged that its departure could disrupt the routines of customers who have relied on the platform for their transportation needs over the years.

The company apologised to affected users and assured them that its Help Centre would remain available until September 23, 2026, to assist customers with any outstanding account-related enquiries following the shutdown.

The announcement has sparked reactions among Nigerians, particularly customers and drivers who have used the ride-hailing platform since its entry into the country.

While some users expressed disappointment over the decision, others reflected on Uber’s contribution to Nigeria’s rapidly developing ride-hailing industry over the past 12 years.

Uber’s exit marks the end of more than a decade of operations in one of Africa’s largest transportation markets, where its platform became a familiar option for commuters seeking app-based transportation services.
