In a press statement, Mbadiwe addressed the situation, stating that Prof Ikechebelu was never officially appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor by the Council. Instead, he was overseeing the office temporarily following the retirement of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone, in accordance with directives from the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Mbadiwe clarified: “Professor Joseph Ikechebelu was never appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor by the Council. He merely oversaw the office temporarily following NUC directives, pending Council’s inauguration.”

The statement further highlighted that due process was followed in the appointment of Prof Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor. Mbadiwe emphasized the Council’s commitment to resolving any legal challenges surrounding the appointment process and ensuring the university’s continued progress.
