According to a report from DAILY POST, Prof Ikechebelu was recently replaced by Prof Carol Umobi as the acting Vice-Chancellor, a decision that sparked protests from some Senate members and students.
In a press statement, Mbadiwe addressed the situation, stating that Prof Ikechebelu was never officially appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor by the Council. Instead, he was overseeing the office temporarily following the retirement of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone, in accordance with directives from the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Mbadiwe clarified: “Professor Joseph Ikechebelu was never appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor by the Council. He merely oversaw the office temporarily following NUC directives, pending Council’s inauguration.”
The statement further highlighted that due process was followed in the appointment of Prof Carol Arinze-Umobi as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor. Mbadiwe emphasized the Council’s commitment to resolving any legal challenges surrounding the appointment process and ensuring the university’s continued progress.
“We assure all stakeholders that the Council’s actions are in the best interest of the university’s growth and development,” Mbadiwe reassured.
He concluded by affirming the Council’s dedication to maintaining peace, order, and advancement at Nnamdi Azikiwe University amidst the ongoing transitions.
