In a recent development, it has been revealed that the former Managing Director of the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Aliyu Abdlhameed, who was previously sacked from his position, has now been arrested for his alleged involvement in a N5.6 billion Wheat Project Scam. NIRSAL, a $500 million non-bank financial institution created by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is tasked with managing agribusiness-related credit risks in Nigeria. CONTINUE READING
The arrest took place last week on the premises of a federal government’s revenue-generating agency in Abuja, where Abdulhameed had gone to lobby for a reappointment. His removal from office occurred almost a year ago due to corruption allegations, including misappropriation of funds meant for a 2018 N5.6 billion wheat project intended for farmers in Kano and Jigawa States. The Board of the CBN, with approval from the Presidency, endorsed his dismissal.
In a shocking revelation, it has been reported that during his tenure, the former NIRSAL MD allegedly diverted 32 official vehicles for personal use. Additionally, it is claimed that he made away with nine exotic vehicles, including two bulletproof jeeps, along with household items from four official guest houses owned by NIRSAL in Lagos, Abuja, and Yola. This discovery raises serious questions about financial mismanagement and abuse of office during Abdulhameed’s leadership at NIRSAL. The unfolding investigation will likely shed more light on the extent of these alleged financial irregularities.
