In a recent report, the United States has drawn attention to the significant challenge of overcrowding in Nigerian prisons.
Published in the ‘2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria,’ the US highlighted that many correctional facilities are struggling with a 50 per cent increase in inmate numbers beyond their intended capacity, indicating a systemic issue.
The report revealed that numerous prisons, some dating back 70 to 80 years, are facing difficulties in meeting basic living standards. Overcrowding was identified as a significant problem, with prison facilities as of September housing 50 per cent more inmates than their designed capacity.Additionally, the report emphasized the lack of essential facilities such as clean water and proper sewage systems, leading to hazardous and unsanitary conditions within Nigerian prisons. Healthcare provision within these facilities was also found to be lacking, with shortages of medical supplies exacerbating the situation.
