The tribunal, convening in Abuja, will deliver its judgment on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the results of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, which declared Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Okpebholo as the victor with 291,667 votes, while Ighodalo garnered 247,655 votes. The PDP, however, alleges electoral irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

In anticipation of the ruling, Governor Okpebholo released a statement on Tuesday, urging his supporters to remain calm and respectful of the judicial process.

“We have experienced a robust and competitive election, and I acknowledge the legal rights of all parties. The tribunal’s judgment is a fundamental part of our democracy, and we must uphold its authority,” Okpebholo stated.

He stressed the need to maintain peace and unity within the state, emphasizing that political differences should not hinder the state’s progress.

“Our priority is the continued development of our state. Let us not allow political disagreements to threaten the peace and harmony we have diligently fostered,” he added.

The governor also called on political and community leaders, as well as citizens, to support unity, uphold the rule of law, and refrain from spreading false information.

“I urge everyone to respect the rule of law, maintain peace, and avoid disseminating misinformation,” Okpebholo remarked.

Expressing his confidence in the judiciary, the governor affirmed his belief in a fair and just ruling and commended the resilience of the state’s people.

“I trust the judiciary to render a fair verdict and have faith in the strength and maturity of our citizens,” he concluded, calling for continued commitment to democracy, peace, and progress.
