The Biden administration has announced the automatic cancellation of $39 billion in student debt for over 800,000 borrowers, according to U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. The federal loans will be discharged in the coming weeks, aiming to address the failures of a broken system that failed to accurately track borrowers’ progress towards forgiveness. CONTINUE READING
Cardona emphasized the administration’s commitment to rectifying past administrative shortcomings and ensuring that all borrowers receive the debt relief they deserve. The announcement follows the administration’s efforts to level the playing field in higher education, including providing forgiveness for public servants, students defrauded by their colleges, and borrowers with permanent disabilities, including veterans.
The Department of Education attributed the forthcoming discharges to fixes implemented by the Biden-Harris Administration, which aimed to rectify historical failures in the administration of the Federal student loan program. These fixes include ensuring accurate counts of qualifying monthly payments under income-driven repayment plans.
Borrowers will be eligible for forgiveness if they have accumulated the equivalent of either 20 or 25 years of qualifying months. The Department of Education will continue to identify and notify borrowers who reach the applicable forgiveness thresholds until next year when all borrowers who are not yet eligible for forgiveness will have their payment counts updated.
It is worth noting that the announcement comes after the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Biden administration cannot proceed with its student loan debt cancellation program. The court held that federal law does not allow the secretary of education to cancel over $430 billion in student loan debt. Despite this setback, President Biden expressed his determination to explore alternative avenues to provide relief to hard-working middle-class families.
The student loan initiative, which was on hold pending litigation, aimed to provide debt relief of up to $10,000 (up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients) for individuals earning less than $125,000 annually. The program was projected to cost the government over $400 billion.
