VP Shettima Under Pressure As Governors, Lawmakers Battle To Replace Him – Full List Revealed

Fresh uncertainty now surrounds the political future of Vice President Kashim Shettima, amid growing signs that he might not be selected as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general elections.

Multiple high-ranking sources within the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) told Sunday Punch that internal party calculations are already in motion, with several influential factions pushing forward alternative candidates for the vice-presidential slot.

According to insiders, four northern governors—Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Muhammadu Yahaya (Gombe), Uba Sani (Kaduna), and Dikko Radda (Katsina)—have emerged as frontrunners in the race to potentially replace Shettima.

“The Katsina governor’s ambition is well known,” a source close to the matter revealed, adding that political maneuvering in the North has intensified as contenders seek to assert influence ahead of 2027.

Also reportedly eyeing the position are Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, and Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who both represent formidable factions within the APC.

Despite having regular access to President Tinubu, Shettima is said to be facing mounting internal criticism over what party insiders describe as a lack of “independent political strength.”

One senior APC official remarked, “Yes, he sees the President frequently. But he hasn’t won the President’s full trust. He’s yet to show real initiative or decisive leadership.”

The Vice President is increasingly viewed, the source added, as someone who acts “solely on instructions” without asserting the authority typically expected from someone in his role.
