The outgoing Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State, Rev John Joseph Hayab, has issued an appeal to Nigerians, urging them to refrain from resorting to violence during protests. Expressing concern about the increasing number of uprisings across the nation, Hayab highlighted the recent surge in protests related to economic hardships and the soaring costs of goods and services.
In his statement titled “Addressing Nigeria’s Rising Cost Of Living Needs Wisdom,” Hayab emphasized the detrimental impact of protests that involve the destruction of government buildings and infrastructure, stating that such actions would be detrimental to Nigeria.
Hayab stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to navigate the current challenges, pointing out that hunger and frustration in the country could potentially lead to the exploitation of genuine protests by criminal elements and self-serving groups, resulting in widespread harm to innocent citizens.
The CAN Chairman acknowledged the difficulties faced by most Nigerians due to the escalating prices of essential commodities, emphasizing that citizens should not allow external forces to manipulate them into engaging in street protests solely based on the high cost of living. He warned that such protests could be hijacked by elements seeking to undermine the nation’s progress, exacerbating the ongoing hardships and affecting the future.
Calling for unity among religious leaders, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and citizens across age groups and political affiliations, Hayab advocated for constructive dialogue to find viable solutions for the country. He urged these influential figures not to contribute to the destruction of the democratic gains accumulated over the years, emphasizing that poverty transcends ethnic, religious, regional, or political boundaries.
Hayab concluded by emphasizing that the present economic challenges should not be solely attributed to the current administration, highlighting the need for a collective effort in addressing the complex issues facing the nation.
