Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized the prevalent issue of maltreatment faced by domestic workers, emphasizing that while having assistance at home is not a problem, mistreating those helpers poses significant challenges. She urged Nigerians to take a stand against child abuse and maltreatment, encouraging the reporting of such cases. The Minister assured that the Ministry of Women Affairs, along with state ministers, would actively respond to reported incidents.
In her call for collective responsibility, the Minister highlighted the crucial roles of neighbors, teachers, and the media in raising awareness about child abuse. She urged these stakeholders to be vigilant, recognize signs of maltreatment, and report any concerns promptly. Teachers, in particular, were advised to engage with children, ask questions, and report any suspicions to relevant authorities.
Furthermore, the Minister stressed the need for extensive public enlightenment and sensitization on the issue of child abuse. She acknowledged that many children suffer due to inadequate parenting and pleaded with parents to refrain from having more children than they can properly care for. She criticized the practice of neglecting children or sending them to help others without ensuring their well-being. The Minister urged parents to be diligent, work hard, and responsibly manage their resources, emphasizing that even simple livelihoods, such as roasting corn, can bring joy and financial stability.
In a stern message, she discouraged the notion of having numerous children with the expectation that one of them would eventually support the parents in old age. The Minister highlighted the risks involved, including the potential for some children to die amid the hardships they endure. She implored parents to be responsible and to only have as many children as they can genuinely nurture and support.
