We Will Miss Him — Fernandes Breaks Silence On Ronaldo’s Portugal Exit
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has described Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest symbol of Portuguese football despite taking over the national team captaincy from the veteran forward.
Fernandes made the remarks after captaining Portugal to a 4-2 victory over Denmark in the Nations League following Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Ronaldo reportedly left the camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus after being left out of Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in their previous match.
With Ronaldo absent, Fernandes was handed the captain’s armband and delivered an influential display against Denmark, creating five chances and providing two assists as Portugal secured an important victory.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s next meeting with Norway, Fernandes said the change in captaincy would not diminish Ronaldo’s enormous contribution to the national team or the country.
The Manchester United midfielder also revealed that he had spoken with Ronaldo following the development and rejected suggestions that the situation had created divisions within the squad.
Fernandes said Ronaldo would remain Portugal’s greatest football symbol because of his achievements for the national team and his global impact.
The midfielder’s performance against Denmark came despite concerns over a hip problem that had previously kept him out of Portugal’s match against Norway. He returned to the starting XI in Copenhagen and assisted Goncalo Ramos for Portugal’s opening goal in the 25th minute.
However, Jorge Jesus believed Fernandes could have a greater influence on the game and challenged him to raise his performance during the half-time interval.
The Portugal coach later said Fernandes responded positively to the instructions and produced a stronger display after the break.
Jesus explained that he demanded more from Fernandes because of the importance of his role in the team, adding that the midfielder improved considerably in the second half and delivered an important pass to Vitinha.
Despite the attention surrounding Ronaldo’s departure, Fernandes maintained that the Portugal squad remains united and focused on its footballing objectives.
