We’re Worth Every Naira’ – Bella Shmurda Explains Why Nigerian Artistes Charge So Much

Nigerian singer Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi, popularly known as Bella Shmurda, has dismissed claims that Nigerian artistes are charging exorbitant performance fees.

Speaking during an interview with Naija FM Lagos, the “Eye Clear” hitmaker explained that the high performance fees are justified, as artistes bear significant expenses in producing and promoting their music.

According to Bella Shmurda, a large portion of what musicians earn goes into paying producers, songwriters, engineers, and other professionals who work behind the scenes to make their music successful.

He further highlighted the costly nature of maintaining a public image, including wardrobe expenses and the lifestyle expected of celebrities.

“From an artiste’s perspective, making music is expensive. I don’t repeat clothes because I’m a public figure. I spent about $100,000—over ₦100 million—on producers, songwriters, and engineers for my album. That’s not even including video shoots and promotion costs,” he said.

Bella Shmurda added that artistes charge fees that reflect their level of investment, not to exploit fans or promoters.

“When I go for shows, I charge an amount that at least allows me to recover my production costs. We are not overcharging; if you see it from our side, you’ll understand,” he concluded.
