During a recent court session at Ikeja High Court, Mr. Jubril Yakubu, a Deputy Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, provided crucial testimony regarding the late Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student at Chrisland School.
Yakubu stated that Whitney had visited the hospital on January 20, 2023, just before the scheduled inter-house sports event. He further confirmed that Whitney was present at school on February 1, 7, and 9, 2023, specifically to participate in the inter-house sports activities. However, Yakubu noted that Whitney chose not to take part in the events on the actual inter-house sports day.
Under cross-examination by Mr. Ademola Animasaun, counsel to Chrisland Schools, Yakubu affirmed that Whitney did not participate in the sports activities voluntarily and was not coerced by the school to do so. He clarified that issues related to emergency measures were beyond his scope but emphasized the importance of having nurses present at such events for emergency preparedness, not solely for emergency response.
Despite being unable to provide an exact count of schools within district six as of December 31, 2023, Yakubu asserted his oversight of more than 1,722 schools approved by the Ministry of Education. He highlighted the role of designated safeguarding and child protection officers in schools, citing Mrs. Tawa Sodiq as the officer responsible in district six, reporting to him.
Yakubu criticized Chrisland Schools for purportedly failing to adhere to Lagos State’s Safety and Child Protection Policy. The witness’s testimony is part of the ongoing legal proceedings following the tragic death of Whitney Adeniran, for which Chrisland Schools Ltd., its principal, vice principal, and others stand accused of manslaughter.
The case has been adjourned until June 13 for further proceedings.
