The Federal Government announced that, starting next week, ministers will begin holding regular press briefings to inform Nigerians about government policies and initiatives.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed this in Abuja, emphasizing that Tinubu has instructed all ministers to engage with the public more frequently to enhance transparency and accountability.
In an interview with Punch, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the directive aligns with Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to accountability.
“The President has always insisted that ministers must render accounts of their work. However, not all of them have been doing so. By mandating them to step forward and speak, the Information Minister is simply carrying out the President’s directive. This is not linked to any assessment or cabinet reshuffle—it’s solely about keeping the public informed,” Onanuga explained.
A source close to the President, who spoke on condition of anonymity, supported this view, adding, “This is not about evaluation or reshuffling. Ministers have done this before, and this is just a reinforcement of that practice. The assessment criteria for ministers are entirely different.”
