Why We Are Staying Away From Sowore’s Protest — NANS Speaks

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced that it will not participate in the Take It Back (TIB) protest movement led by activist Omoyele Sowore.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The student body accused the movement of using activism as a cover for political interests rather than genuine advocacy, according to a statement issued in Abuja.

NANS said the group’s activities appear to be driven by hidden political motives, rather than purely student or civic concerns.

The NANS president, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, also dismissed a report questioning his student status, describing it as false and misleading. He confirmed that he is a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology.

He further accused Sowore and the TIB Movement of blending activism, journalism, and politics in a way that obscures their true intentions, claiming the group is increasingly perceived as a political organisation rather than an independent advocacy platform.

Akinteye also alleged, without providing evidence, that some individuals have linked the movement to groups such as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

He stated that NANS would not collaborate with Sowore or the TIB Movement in protests concerning the abduction of students and teachers.

The student leader commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for their support in efforts to address kidnapping cases affecting students.

He added that NANS would continue to advocate for the release of abducted students and hold the government accountable for security challenges.

Despite the disagreement, he reaffirmed the association’s commitment to peaceful engagement and rejected any form of violence or public disorder.
