Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Wike strongly defended the renaming, arguing that the centre should not bear the name of individuals he referred to as “armed robbers.”

He also reiterated that the facility is already fully booked until 2027.

Wike said:
“The ICC is fully booked until 2027, yet people are questioning why I named it after President Bola Tinubu. Who else is more deserving? Why not him?”

“We have the IBB International Golf Club—why wasn’t it just called the International Golf Club? ‘International Conference Centre’ was never a name linked to any individual.”

“What exactly is sycophancy? Recognizing someone who has demonstrated leadership and supported progress isn’t sycophancy. Do we only honour people after they die? While President Tinubu is still alive and contributing to the country’s development, we must acknowledge his efforts.”

“So why all the uproar about renaming the ICC? Should we rather name it after criminals or armed robbers?”
