Wike Reveals All: ‘Why I Refused To Support Peter Obi In 2023

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has opened up about why he chose not to support Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 general elections.

In a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, Wike dismissed Obi’s candidacy, labeling him a “social media candidate” and stating that his campaign lacked realistic prospects. “He had no chance of winning,” Wike asserted. “I don’t support candidates who rely on social media popularity. I don’t do that.”

Wike, who served as Rivers State governor until 2023, emphasized that his political decisions are rooted in careful analysis and the viability of a candidate, not online following. “As a politician, I analyze who has the real potential to win,” he added.

The FCT Minister pointed out that success in Nigerian elections depends on several factors beyond qualifications or digital fame. “Politics is not just about being the best candidate,” Wike explained. “Many factors come into play in Nigerian politics.”

He also reflected on the challenging environment of the 2023 election, including the controversial naira redesign policy and fuel shortages. “It was extremely tough for Tinubu to get through that election,” Wike noted. “You could see that people weren’t being truthful about the situation before the election.”

Wike went on to praise President Bola Tinubu for navigating these difficulties and emerging victorious. “No party in government would have implemented those policies during an election unless they were certain they could survive it,” Wike said. “But Tinubu did, and he survived it.”

Finally, Wike lauded Tinubu’s political skills and resilience. “It’s clear that some people are not just lucky, but also have God on their side and know the game. You have to respect that,” he concluded.
