Witness Claims Emefiele Ordered Transfer Of Funds To Relative’s Account In CourtA former secretary in the office of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, John Ogah, testified in court about how his former boss, Godwin Emefiele, instructed him to transfer funds to a close relative. This revelation was made during proceedings at the Ikeja Special Offences Court, where Emefiele and another individual, Henry Omoile, are facing charges of abuse of office and money laundering.

During cross-examination, Ogah clarified that neither Emefiele nor his wife, Margaret, were shareholders in three companies that were allegedly connected to them. He explained that the fund transfers were conducted through the companies Comec, Limelight, and Amswin Resources Limited.

Under questioning from Emefiele’s attorney, Olakekan Ojo, SAN, Ogah reiterated that the former governor and his wife did not hold shares in the mentioned companies. “The first defendant and his wife were not shareholders in the three companies linked to them,” he affirmed.

Ogah attempted to clarify the concept of beneficial ownership but admitted that he had not provided any documentation to substantiate their shareholder status in court. He noted that he kept records during his time as secretary to Emefiele, meant for internal reference, but had not shared these records with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while in custody.

He also stated that there was no written communication between himself and Emefiele, emphasizing that about 99 percent of Emefiele’s instructions were conveyed verbally rather than in writing.

When further questioned by the defense’s second lead counsel, Kazeem Gbadamosi, SAN, Ogah acknowledged his role as both a director and a shareholder in a construction company. He mentioned that while the company has an account with Zenith Bank, he is not a signatory to it, nor is his name on the mandate form used to open the account.
