Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has decried the pervasive impunity in Nigeria, pointing out how individuals embroiled in corruption allegations have risen to prominence in the country’s political sphere. In an interview with Noble Nigeria, the 89-year-old Nigerian playwright, novelist, poet, and essayist stressed the imperative of revising the Constitution to address not only these challenges but also other threats to the nation’s cohesion.
Soyinka emphasized the necessity for a constitutional overhaul during a discussion on tackling the prevailing economic, socio-political, and socio-cultural hurdles. He highlighted the urgent need for Nigerians to convene and redefine constitutional frameworks to foster peaceful coexistence and institutional integrity.
Furthermore, Soyinka shed light on systemic issues within the judiciary, where legal technicalities often delay justice, enabling wrongdoers to ascend to influential positions and evade accountability despite facing serious charges from agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC.
“In order to remedy the culture of impunity,” Soyinka stated, “we must address the prevalence of individuals in high-ranking positions, including legislative committees, who ought to be facing trial. The judiciary, too, faces criticism for its susceptibility to legal loopholes that prolong the adjudication process.”
He underscored the gravity of these challenges and called for a concerted and thorough approach to address them effectively.
Soyinka’s remarks underscored the urgency of confronting these issues with resolve and diligence, emphasizing the critical role of constitutional reform in Nigeria’s journey towards justice and progress.
