Woman Faces Charges After Allegedly Embezzling N2.1m From Deceased Partner’s Account
A 42-year-old woman, Ihuoma Onunyere, stood before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, accused of pilfering N2.1 million from her late boyfriend’s account. The defendant, a businesswoman residing in Yaba, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the theft charge.According to the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Innocent Odugbo, Onunyere purportedly committed the offense between October 27 and November 20, 2023, in Yaba, Lagos. Allegedly, she withdrew the funds from the account of Mr. John Nwanu via his mobile phone app posthumously. The discovery was made by the late man’s daughter, Ruth, who promptly reported the incident to the authorities.The prosecutor highlighted that Onunyere’s actions contravene Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The Magistrate, Miss M. F Onamusi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned until May 8 for further proceedings.
