A tragic incident unfolded at the Okpoko Market junction along the Asaba-Onitsha express road in Anambra State, resulting in the untimely death of a woman. The accident, which occurred around 12:20 pm on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, involved a commercial tow truck bearing registration number XA550BMA.
According to reports, the victim was in the process of crossing the road when a vehicle being towed became detached from the tow truck, fatally injuring her. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) responded swiftly, with their rescue team arriving at the scene promptly and transferring the deceased woman to the morgue.
Confirming the incident, Charles Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer for Public Education at the FRSC, described the sequence of events. He stated, “At about 12:20hrs, a white-colored commercial Tow Truck with registration number XA550BMA, model ML180, was towing a vehicle at an uncontrollable speed along the axis.”
“The unfortunate accident occurred when a female adult attempted to cross the road, resulting in the detachment of the towed vehicle from the truck, leading to the tragic demise of the woman,” he added.
Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander for Anambra State, urged them to find strength in this trying time. He emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism among motorists, especially towing truck drivers, and stressed the necessity of using standard equipment for such operations.
Furthermore, Commander Irelewuyi highlighted the significance of adhering to prescribed speed limits for all vehicles traversing the expressway, promoting safety for all road users.
