Workshop Attendees Demand Comprehensive Police Reforms

The workshop, organized by the CLEEN Foundation, featured a welcome address by the Executive Director of the foundation, Mr. Gad Peter, who highlighted the organization’s longstanding commitment to advocating for justice and citizen engagement in Nigeria. Represented by Programme Officer Mr. Nnamdi Odo, Peter emphasized that effective policing is crucial for Nigeria’s progress, and the workshop aimed to address challenges in law enforcement.

“For the past 25 years, CLEEN Foundation has been at the forefront of promoting public peace and security in Nigeria, with support from our partners, including the MacArthur Foundation,” said Peter. He reiterated the foundation’s dedication to pushing for reforms in the nation’s security system.

Mr. Chuks Okpunor, Delta State Coordinator of the Observatory Group, emphasized the group’s continuous efforts to engage key players in the security and judicial sectors within Delta State. He noted that the group has been working closely with the police, correctional services, and the state Ministry of Justice to advocate for necessary reforms in the criminal justice system.

In a goodwill message, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Delta State chapter, Sonia Unobunjo, lauded the CLEEN Foundation’s efforts in promoting public safety, security, and access to justice. “In a nation like Nigeria, where many face significant challenges related to safety and security, your work in raising awareness, providing support, and advocating for stronger laws and collaboration among stakeholders is making a real difference,” Unobunjo stated.

Mr. Precious Nwadimuya, Chairman of the Asaba branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, echoed the importance of the workshop’s theme, “Citizens’ Engagement on Police Reform and Accountability for Justice Sector Actors.” He stressed that laws in Nigeria, particularly in Delta State, apply to all citizens regardless of social class, tribe, or religion. Nwadimuya urged security agencies to uphold ethical standards in their operations to foster a peaceful society and a stable economy.

He also pointed out that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 serves as a guiding framework for discussions at the workshop, ensuring a fair and efficient criminal justice system while safeguarding the rights of all participants, particularly defendants. In Delta State, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACTL) 2022 is the applicable statute
