Yemi Alade Opens Up: ‘I Can’t Sleep Without Smoking’ — Fans React To Sh*cking Revelation
Nigerian music star Yemi Alade has opened up about a period in her life when she struggled with a brief addiction to cigarettes during her university days.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The “Oh My Gosh” crooner revealed in an interview with Chude Jideonwo that she began smoking as a teenager but soon realised the habit was taking a toll on her health and her voice.
Alade explained that what started as a casual experiment quickly turned into a nightly routine. She would smoke secretly before going to bed and often hid the act from those around her because she felt ashamed of it.
“When I was in the university, I tried smoking. It didn’t work out — but before it didn’t work out, it worked out a bit too much,” she said. “I started needing to smoke before I went to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle. But in public, I would hide the cigarette.”
The award-winning singer said the double life made her uncomfortable and dependent, as she began to feel she couldn’t sleep without smoking.
“I thought to myself, what kind of life is this — hiding to smoke, yet feeling restless without it? As a teenager trying to figure out life, I decided that if I had to hide to do something, then I shouldn’t be doing it,” she said.
According to her, that self-realisation marked a turning point. She made a personal decision to quit once she noticed how cigarettes were affecting her voice and overall well-being.
“Cigarettes were not for me. They harmed me — they affected my voice,” she admitted. “So, I stopped. My smoking phase didn’t even last up to a year.”
Alade said she chose self-awareness and discipline over addiction, describing the decision to quit as one of the most important choices she made in her early adulthood.
