“You Can’t Be Singing Against Oppressors And Still Be An Oppressor” – Deji Adeyanju Calls Out Burna Boy Over Speed Darlington’s Arrest Written By Oshiobugie John– Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has voiced his disapproval of popular Nigerian musician, Burna Boy, over the recent arrest of fellow artist, Speed Darlington. Adeyanju, known for his strong stance on freedom of expression, criticized Burna Boy for allegedly playing a role in the arrest of Speed Darlington, questioning the contradiction between Burna Boy’s public persona as a voice against oppression and his reported actions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The controversy began when Speed Darlington, born Darlington Okoye, was taken into custody following a petition filed against him by Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu. The petition came after Speed Darlington made a video questioning Burna Boy’s Grammy win, in which he sarcastically asked how much “Diddy” (American rapper Sean John Combs) had “poured on him” to secure the prestigious award. This provocative comment led to Burna Boy filing the complaint, which eventually resulted in Darlington’s arrest at his home in Lagos. He was subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he has been detained since Friday.
Confirming his involvement in the case, Adeyanju took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to announce that he had located Speed Darlington and had taken up the fight to secure his release. “We have just located Speed Darlington and we are working on getting him freed. The attack on freedom of expression in Nigeria must stop,” Adeyanju posted, stressing the importance of protecting free speech in the country.
Adeyanju did not hold back in his criticism of Burna Boy, pointing out the hypocrisy of the situation. “You can’t be singing against oppressors and still be an oppressor,” Adeyanju remarked, calling out the artist for undermining the very values he claims to stand for in his music.
Taking swift action, Adeyanju further confirmed that his legal team had officially taken over the case, stating, “We are now involved in the Speed Darlington matter. We will do everything to get him freed. Nobody should be arrested by the police for expressing their views or opinions.” Adeyanju urged Nigerian authorities to halt what he called the “clampdown” on freedom of speech, highlighting the ongoing issue of curtailing individual rights in the country.
In an update on Tuesday, Adeyanju revealed more details about Speed Darlington’s arrest and detention, saying, “We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos last Friday, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja. He has been in detention since then. The petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm.”
